The history of governing the city
There was not any municipality organization in year 1864. By conforming the order of province regulation issued by the Ottoman Government in year 1864, Antalya mayor ship (municipality) was established.
The most important duty of the municipality at that time was to perform the cleaning of the city and carrying out the maintenance of the roads within Antalya and arrangement of the environment when there was money.In this period, Antalya municipality attempted to perform the development works besides cleaning of the city. By the maintenance of the channels that bring water from the Duden creek and the road that goes to Antalya quay has been arranged for enabling the carts to go up and down. In year 1915 a clock tower was built on the pentagon tower at the east side of Kalekapısı.
The period of republic Undertaking of duties in today’s municipality meaning of Antalya municipality starts with the period of republic. The first mayor after the republic is Seremetzade Zeki Bey.
The municipality election held on 7-18 October 1930 was won by Husnu Bey of CHF( Republican People Party). During this period Kalekapısı became a shopping centre.
During the period of Lutfi Gokceoglu who became mayor in 1934, Antalya undergone large scaled development activities. Especially determination of new places for animal and grain markets gave a very contemporary appearance to the city.In year 1936” sanitary municipal police regulation “was prepared.
In years 1941-43 Karalioglu and Hatay parks were constructed. A modern slaughterhouse and ice factory was established. New public markets, public toilettes and modern municipality bakeries were opened.Dr Burhanettin Onat which acted as a mayor in years 1943-1947, made many attempts to introduce Antalya in foreign countries from the point of tourism.For the name of municipality, in 1947-1962 periods no development was established in Antalya and the existing structures could not be preserved.
During the period of Dr Avni Tolunay who was selected twice as a mayor between years 1963-73, the city of Antalya was rescued from unpaved roads and even the smallest streets were covered with concrete. He made great initiatives for introducing Antalya inside the country and in abroad.He has taken the Antalya festival among the municipality activities that was being performed by Antalya tourism association until that day and in year 1964; by adding the international Film Contest he established the presentation of Antalya from this point. By adding up the marriage of three German couples each year and collective circumcision activities into the festival program he integrated with the people.
Attorney. Selahhtin Tonguc which was selected twice as a mayor in a row between years 1973-80, has looked surprisingly good with artistic activities. By the new development plans; large boulevards and streets were opened and the city of Antalya started to prepare for the years of 2000.After 12 September 1980 until 1984 that the first elections were held, 4 different mayors were appointed to Antalya.
After year 1984 in order Yener Ulusoy ( 1984-87) and Metin Kasapoglu ( 1987-89) was elected as maoyor.During the period of attorney Hasan Subası which was elected as mayor in 1989 Muratpasa, Kepez and Konyaaltı municipalities were established and the city was transformed into” metropolitan municipality “. By wining the election held in 1994, Hasan Subası has remained on duty until year 1999.
In the period of 1999-2004, Dr Bekir Kumbul was in office. At the general elections held on 28 March 2004 Menderes Turel that has taken % 34.77 of the votes was elected as the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality mayor.
